This season, one of the MIX challenges invited artists to explore the idea of line through three distinct 18 × 18-inch works. The chosen theme-Line Dance, Crossing the Line, and Tangled-offer three very different starting points, open to interpretation. Beyond the theme, there were no rules. Each artist was free to follow their own instincts, choosing the subject, style, and materials that best expressed their response.
Over the coming weeks, we’ll be revealing the works one by one — three themes, three perspectives, and a whole lot of ways to draw a line.
First is the work of Janet Fogg.
Line Dance naturally brings to mind the energy and rhythm of country-western dancing. Here, intricately rendered cowboy boots take center stage, placed on a square tile floor to complete the playful dance.
For Crossing the Line, what better image than hopscotch? A familiar childhood game comes to life, complete with classic Mary Jane shoes stepping across the lines.
And Tangled takes us back to the schoolyard days of black-and-white shoes and endless shoelaces. Those laces, twisted and often double-knotted for good measure, become the perfect finishing touch to the theme.
